New Jersey Reparations Narrative Symposium

On February 28, 2024, Chief Mann and Nagisa Manabe, RCLF's Director of Development joined a gathering of Newark and National thought leaders for a symposium to strengthen our narrative on reparations. Artist Garrison Hayes encouraged us to speak of the unbroken chain of oppression, and Dr. Marcus Hunter shared his thoughts about the permanence of racism and encouraged us to think boldly about the future saying "If we imagine it, we can manifest it." We are grateful to the Dodge Foundation for including us in this event which was hosted by Liberation Ventures, the International Center for Transitional Justice, and the NJ Institute for Social Justice. The Ramapough Culture and Land Foundation looks forward to partnering with this auspicious group of attendees to work with NJ Reparations for Black and Indigenous people in our state.

NJEA Virtual Session for Educators: On the afternoon of Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, Chief Mann, Mikie, Prof. Jack Tchen, Kerry Hardy and Karelle Hall presented education materials to a group of more than 50 NJEA Teachers during a two-hour statewide, virtual meeting regarding our region's history, the Nanticoke Lenape Language and Indigenous Healing Gardens. We were delighted with the engagement of the participants and excited to know that much of the information will support the development of future curriculum. The video is available with this link. pacts of the coloniality of "divide and conquer" has never been greater in my lifetime. Some may look at the thematic and believe this is just for those of this background. It's true we each need to look at the unspoken and unacknowledged erasures within all our identity formations. But the threats of global warming, genocides, neofascism, white heteropatriarchy, and narcissistic billionaires must be met with a global citizenry pushing back. This deep dive into our particular intersected historical genealogies is essential for coming together in truly participatory democracies. The event started with an opening prayer and blessing from Chief Mann. This event was free in person and online. Those attending in person will get the benefit of live music, great talks, good food, books, and being part of the Marion Thompson Wright tradition, please save the date for next year!

Day 1: First Gathering of Leaders of Five Nations on Friday January 26, 2024: On Friday January 26th, the Five Nations Leaders joined together for a Regional Meeting of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Nation, the Lenape of Pennsylvania, the Lenape Indian Tribe of Delaware, the Powhatan Renape Nation, and the Ramapough Munsee Nations at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. They were hosted by Professors Brian Schillling and Oscar Schofield of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. We were also joined by members of the NJ Commission of Native American Affairs.
